Recently, Rice and Beans partnered up with UMVIM as a foreign ministry partner in Costa Rica.

UMVIM provides opportunities for service by developing and nurturing relationships with domestic and international leaders. They continually nurture  contacts with teams and leaders to respond to the needs of local communities and to provide comprehensive project information. They strive to connect volunteers’ talents to suitable projects for effective service.

The Maria Project

For years, Rice and Beans has been visiting Central America with the vision to feed the hungy and give them the true message of Christ's love. Over the years, relationships have been made and nurtured through constant contact with many of the people we've met.The Maria Project began as a vision to empower the local congregations to have an outreach to their local communities, to build or repair housing , and to participate in the ministry of Rice and Beans. By cooking for the indigent and homeless, buying uniforms for school children, and having worship and bible study opportunities in the poorest of areas, volunteers have begun to be incredbly involved in their own ministry. The Maria Project, named after a woman who lives in a plastic house with four children, is now building a house for its namesake with donated materials. When we found Maria, she only had 1 cup of rice to feed her 4 children.

If you are interested in helping to build Maria's new house, please contact us. The rate of pay is $1 per hour, Coke costs $1.25 per litre, a kilo of rice costs $3, and power and water bills usually cost $50 per month. There are also other needs of the family that need to be met as well.
